Chapel Hill Islamic Society (CHIS)

About Us

Chapel Hill Islamic Society (CHIS) is a non-profit organization formed for the purpose of pleasing ALLAH (SWT) by obeying His commands. It shall invite to all that is good, enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong according to Qur’an and Sunnah.

Toward this end it shall;

  1. Help Muslims to understand and practice Islam based on Qur’an and Sunnah.
  2. Conduct religious, educational, social and other activities according to Islam.
  3. Promote unity and joint action among Muslims.
  4. Endeavor to make Islam known to non-Muslims.
  5. Establish and conduct the affairs of the Islamic Center.

Muslims in Chapel Hill and vicinity are encouraged to become active members of the Society. Please download the Membership Application Form and submit along with the membership fees.

General Body

The General Body of CHIS consists of all members who have paid their annual membership dues. Members are eligible to vote in the general body and Shura elections upon payment of their $10 annual membership dues by March 1st.

CHIS Records
CHIS books and records of account and minutes of the proceedings of its Shura and committees are kept at its registered address (232 St. Andrews Ln, Chapel Hill, NC 27517). They may be inspected by any member for any proper purpose at any reasonable time. Please email chismailnc@gmail.com your request.

Directors

The Board of Directors consists of 5 members elected by the Shura, and whose function is to assure appropriate functioning of the CHIS in general compliance with its Constitution.

Executive Committee

The executive committee consists of the Shura Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and the Chairpersons for all standing committees. Its duty is to implement the decisions of the Shura, coordinate the work of standing committees, approve membership applications and appropriate funds.

Shura

Majlis As-Shura

The shura is elected for a period of 3 years by the general body. It shall appoint, approve guidelines, and oversee the activities of the committees. Any Muslim aged 20 years or more, who by March 01 of the election year, has been a member of CHIS for at least one year, is eligible to become a member of the Shura.
